The Beaches
Maratea is a lovely old town, nestled against the hillside overlooking the Gulf of Policastro. The picturesque piazza, with its attractive bars and restaurants, is a favourite spot for locals and visitors to sit, relax and enjoy the warm sunshine of the 'Mezzogiorno'.
On the mountain top above the town stands the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, alongside the pretty church of San Biagio. From here, the views are spectacular and it is a favourite destination for visitors to the area. Below the town is the pretty port of Maratea, another relaxing place to spend a few hours sipping a drink or having lunch, while enjoying the view of the local fishing boats and the grand yachts in the harbour.
All along the coast in front of Maratea is a series of beaches, hidden away in beautiful and secluded bays, ideal for sunbathing or swimming in the summer months. The variety of choice for visitors means that some space can always be found, even on crowded holiday weekends. For those looking for a change of scene, a trip inland can be very rewarding. Higher up in the fresher air of the mountains, visitors can take a stroll around the lovely Lago Sirino, and perhaps end the evening with a meal on the restaurant terrace overlooking the lake.
Maratea also hosts a range of lively cultural events throughout the year. In addition to the traditional religious festivals, there are art exhibitions, musical and theatre events including classical concerts, open air opera performances, contemporary music concerts and a jazz and blues festival.
There are also plenty of other, more energetic activities in the area. “The Mararanch” in Castrocucco can arrange horseriding along the beautiful Castrocucco beach in the early morning sun. There is trekking in the mountains above Maratea and for those who prefer the sea, there is an excellent scuba and sailing club at the port of Maratea. Nearby, there are other activities such as skiing on Mount Sirino in the winter months and white water rafting a short drive away.
We will be delighted to make any local telephone enquiries regarding trips, excursions, or events in and around the Maratea area for any guests, and will make sure all literature about events during the summer period is available for you.
